Today the BBC has reported on the new doubts raise about a proposed Heathrow Airport expansion following the results of the EU referendum last Thursday. With a new runway at Heathrow Airport looking like a distinct possibility under David Cameron, a potential break with the EU and a Boris Johnson premiership could put the skids on any Heathrow Airport expansion, and consequential Heathrow Airport parking development, perhaps permanently.

No More Heathrow Airport Parking for Now?

Boris Johnson made no secret of his dislike of any further expansion to Heathrow Airport in his previous position as Mayor of London, but now that a his candidateship for the soon-to-be-vacant Prime Minister’s post is looking likely, this now means the proposed Heathrow Airport expansion might not take place. But what does this mean for more Heathrow Airport parking options? Well, thanks to its position as one of the world’s largest airports, car parking at Heathrow Airport has always been a viable choice for many travellers, and with any Heathrow Airport expansion, comes an inevitable increase in Heathrow Airport parking spaces along with developments in other transport infrastructure. But now that the expansion is looking increasingly unlikely, airport officials may have to look at other ways to cater for increasing passenger numbers, both in terms of plane seats and parking spaces.

Other Expansion Options

If development at Heathrow is no longer on the cards, what other London airports could be in line for the much-needed expansion? With Boris Johnson in charge, Gatwick Airport could well be a likely candidate. Although a smaller site, this could still mean an increase in airport parking on this site too, as well as fundamental changes to how London airports operate in the future.

Inevitable Changes Are Afoot

Whatever is decided in the near and distant future, it’s clear that there will be a huge demand for larger London airports. With the capital currently catered for by many different departure points including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, London City, Luton and Stansted, the way we use Heathrow Airport and Heathrow Airport parking could well change in the future. Last week saw the announcement of three new routes opening up at Luton Airport, so could smaller London airports expand further? Only time will tell.
